Description

Not all that long ago, the perception of an animal shelter was that of a bleak, housing facility where unwanted animals found a temporary home and respite when they had nowhere else to go.

More recently, the concept of animal shelters and animal welfare agencies has started to shift to become community-centered organizations, supporting the human-animal bond, and to provide services not just for animals, but for the community.

The future of animal sheltering can look different for a lot of us; for some, it may include access to low-cost veterinary services, humane education programs, accessible spay and neuter campaigns to reduce pet overpopulation in our own communities, relying on foster parents, and more.

In this interactive session, attendees will break into small, intimate groups to discuss what the future of sheltering looks like to them, and how we, as animal welfare advocates, can start taking action to make this change happen today.

Key learnings:

  1. What are the overarching concepts of the future of sheltering?
  2. Learn about Canadian-based programs which already highlight the ideas of community-centered organizations
  3. How to action ideas to start moving towards the future of sheltering to support the human-animal bond
