Speaker Bio
Dr. Deborah Doherty is the executive director of the Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick. She works to identify the law information needs of the public and create educational resources to meet those needs, eliminate barriers, and promote access to the justice system. She has been actively engaged in participatory-action research for over 25 years. She has written or co-authored several research studies and reports on domestic violence which resulted in the development of evidence-based resources. One such study explored firearms victimization and abuse of pets and farm animals in rural communities. It became the backbone of an awareness campaign called Safer Families…Safer Communities. Deborah is also a member of the NB Silent Witness Committee and her research focused on identifying risk factors for domestic homicide including the abuse of family pets. These various research studies became the impetus for a service called Safe for Pets Too which offers temporary shelter for the pets of women fleeing intimate partner violence. As a solutions minded community scholar Deborah speaks out about the lessons learned and integrates them into her public legal education programming. Most recently, she created a free app called EVO that connects abused women with helpful services online.
