Since 2021, the Montreal SPCA has been developing community-based programs aiming to provide support to vulnerable populations and prevent companion animal abandonment, including a pet food bank, temporary housing programs for refugees and survivors of gender-based violence, and behavioural support services for vulnerable populations. In addition to giving a general overview of these programs and how they function at the Montreal SPCA, this talk will provide guidance on how to initiate such efforts in one’s community. As the person responsible for developing community-based programs in a province where little has been happening in the area, the speaker will also discuss some of the difficulties faced and share insight into how to overcome them.
