This panel will provide attendees with a critical overview of Canada’s animal law landscape, including updates on recent legislative and case law developments. Canada’s animal protection laws are among the worst in the Western world and continue to fail animals used in a range of industries due to a number of factors, including a focus on “unnecessary” cruelty and a lack of regulatory oversight over most industries. Camille and Kaitlyn will provide an overview of Canada’s animal protection laws, including the emerging threat of agricultural gag, or “ag gag”, laws and provide insight regarding law reform and enforcement strategies to improve regulatory oversight to protect vulnerable animals.
