Description

The Human Animal Support Services (HASS) network has been hard at work for the last year developing
approaches and resources to re-imagine animal sheltering in a more community and family centered
model. The External Facing Medical Group, comprised of veterinarians and medical program leadership,
developed three toolkits to support models of providing medical care to owned animals with the goal of
preventing relinquishment of animals with medical conditions. These approaches span a spectrum from
networking with local practices to providing services in a free-standing medical clinic. The overall
principles and approaches will be covered in this session, followed by breakout sessions on the various
models.

Key Learnings:

  1. Review assumptions, principles, and challenges to organizations providing care to owned animals
  2. Explore staffing, resource allocation, and decision-making tools to optimize services and communication
  3. Provide resources from forms to talking points to streamline and strengthen approaches medical programs might take.
