Sinikka Crosland is President of the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) and a board member with the Animal Alliance of Canada (AAC). She is a committed vegan and devoted to the advancement of animal protection. Her past involvement in animal issues includes working with Kelowna, B.C. city officials on exotic animal bylaws, developing and implementing a feral urban rabbit rescue program, and procuring regional district and community involvement for humane, non-lethal beaver management in area waterways.

From 1997 to 2003, Sinikka assisted with the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of hundreds of slaughter-bound horses, including foals from the Pregnant Mare Urine (PMU) industry. The launch of CHDC followed in 2004, in response to a growing need for equine protection. CHDC's goal, to end the practice of horse slaughter in Canada, as well as the export of live horses overseas for the same purpose, has become a national effort, including political and legal initiatives and celebrity involvement.
