James started the CARE Network with a group of neighbours in Tofino in 2012. After forming, the team quickly outlined a comprehensive plan to improve animal wellbeing in the region. It has taken years to get the basic foundation of this plan in place with many twists and turns along the way such as James going to bylaw school, creating empathy (for animals)-developing experiences for children & youth, and establishing an off-grid animal shelter on a shoestring budget.

Rodgers has received a few awards for his animal-helping efforts over the years and of course that is why he does this tiring, dirty and often sad work. Or maybe he does it for his love of animals and to reduce the suffering of animals, their guardians and community members at large. Regardless, James enjoys the work and can often be found applying his 'just-good-enough' carpentry skills to a project around the shelter if he isn't out walking a dog or visiting with a neighbour to discuss animal stuff over a coffee.
